The Nerdist Way

I've started reading The Nerdist Way by Chris Hardwick, and I have to say, I'm impressed. This is a combination of self-help and Chris' story. He lays out the things that have helped him, and suggests that you use what could be useful to you.

As readers of this blog know, I deal with depression. It's a day to day struggle. I picked this book up because I'm a fan of Chris Hardwick, but I was pleased when I started reading it. I'd say that I've hit a plateau, and while I haven't read the entire book, I see a lot of things I can use in my life to get me moving forward again.

I wanted to recommend this book. There just may be something in it for you! Check it out!

New chair with pillow...

Got a new chair a couple of weeks ago, thanks to the Black Friday sales! It's comfortable! Much more comfortable than the $20 chair I had been sitting on!

However, it needed a pillow! Zazzle was having sales at that time, and I ordered a lumbar pillow with one of my designs. Here's the result:

You can pick up your own pillow at Korok Studios

I'm really happy with how the pillow turned out! It looks great, and so far feels comfortable. You know how it is with new pillows... it can take a few days of use before it truly becomes comfortable. But it's firm with some give to it, and as I said, the design turned out amazing as a pillow!

My Trip To Montreal 2013

My new photo book, My Trip To Montreal 2013, is out now on Amazon Kindle!

In September of 2013, I got to take a trip to Montreal. It was a whirlwind trip... 2 nights and 1.5 days. I took a friend, and we walked around the historic district, where we were staying.

I pretty much just let the photos speak for themselves. Check it out, and keep your eyes open on Create Space for the print version.

Take Care!

I made it through another hurricane!

Hurricane Matthew has come and gone.

I live in Jacksonville, FL, and we were in the path of the hurricane. The beaches were told to evacuate beforehand, and many other residents were advised to evacuate. Things were looking grim for us.

Now, to give you some info... there's something about how the coastline juts out in NE Florida that protects it from getting badly hit by hurricanes. They come our way, but never seem to be too bad.

Fortunately, before hitting our area, Matthew jogged off to the East a little bit. The beaches were hit hard! We lost the Jacksonville Beach Pier. I understand that there was flooding.

For me, the beaches are a 20-30 minute drive, depending on traffic. So, I guess I'm 15-20 miles inland. However, the St. John's River is at the end of the street I live on. The hurricane passed through the area Friday afternoon. We lost power (expected) around noon. LOTS of rain and wind.
Fortunately, there was no real damage to our yard and no damage to our house. We mostly had a lot of limbs and debris to pick up. Our next door neighbor did not fare as well. A small oak tree fell on the corner of their house. No one was hurt! Another oak fell over their driveway. The rest of the street mostly just had what we had... debris to clean up, though someone had their car buried under a small tree.
We've all done our clean up, and there are a lot of tree limbs on the curb to be picked up! We got our power back around noon on Saturday, but I understand that power is still not on for some people in our general area. Lots of debris down on the roads, and work crews got out on Saturday and did a lot of "cut and toss", where they cleared the road of fallen trees & limbs, but just tossed them on the side to be picked up later.
Jacksonville has once again come through another hurricane. We might be battered, but people are okay, and that's what matters.

Edit: I almost deleted this, feeling it was kind of "light". This post reflects my experiences and observations. Hurricane Matthew was a massive storm. I heard yesterday that 35 lives were lost in total. I haven't heard about injuries. There was massive damage. We will be weeks and months recovering. There is so much debris piled high at the curb that it's difficult to back out of the driveway, and it's difficult to turn off my street. It's that way all around this area. I can't imagine what the beaches are actually like. I just felt like maybe I left an impression that yeah, the storm blew through but we're all okay now! A friend of mine who only lives a few miles away has been without power for almost a week. We will be some time in recovering.

I didn't post any photos because I didn't take any photos. It was too dangerous to go out in the storm. As far as the aftermath, I'd rather respect people's privacy and not take photos. Go to www.news4jax.com  to learn more about the storm and to see photos. They did an excellent job of covering the storm for our area.

Faith #1 & Gotham City Limits

This week I was able to get out to Gotham City Limits, a comic shop in Jacksonville, FL. It's located at 3373 Southside Blvd, Suite 7. I went in because Donnie, the owner, had ordered some magazine bags and boards for me. I picked those up, and got to have a good visit with Donnie, who I've known for many years.

If you haven't been to Gotham City Limits, it's worth the trip. It's a nice little shop with a great selection of action figures and comics. Of course, I mention the action figures first because these days I seem to get more figures than comics. The staff are friendly, and able to order items that might not be in stock when you visit.

And I apologize... I knew I would blog about it, and I forgot to snap a pic of the store. You can check out the store online at https://www.facebook.com/GothamCityLimits/

While there, Donnie gave me a copy of Faith #1. I remember the character from a book called Harbinger, back in the 1990's. I read it off and on. This first issue of Faith was very good, and I'm interested in seeing more of this heroine.

The story, by Jody Houser, was well told. Artist Pere Perez, with guest sequences by Marguerite Sauvage and Colleen Doran, did a great job! It's refreshing to read about a heroine who doesn't have the typical super-heroine body. Faith could be anyone. I'm looking forward to reading more!

Be sure to pick up a copy of Faith, and if you happen to be on Southside Blvd, stop in at Gotham City Limits and say "hello!"

Gay Dating

So, as a single gay male, I am on some dating sites. Sad to say, there ain't much to them. If you're not on the make for sex, no one is interested. Sorry that I want more from you than a one-time sexual encounter. However, I'm on one site, and actually do have someone there I chat with regularly. He's the only reason I stay there. Well, I had looked at someone else's profile, and sent him a generic "Hi, how are you" message. It was, in my mind at least, an invitation for further conversation. What was the response? Instead of the usual deafening silence, I got hit with "I'm a big bottom!"

Really? You felt the need to respond to "Hello" with "I'm a big bottom!"??? I responded to him because this guy wrote, at length, about how he wanted a relationship and other things about himself. Now, I don't expect anything from online dating except that it's an introduction. You have to meet in the real world to see if there's any chemistry. I just couldn't believe that response. Even if I had been looking for sex, that type of response is such a turn off!

Dating seems to be beyond me. I'm 47, overweight, introverted, and I identify more as a comics geek than gay man. But it wasn't any easier when I was in my 20's and slender. A big part of the problem is that the gay community is very clique-ish, and I don't fit in. I never have fit in. It took a long time for me to get there, but I'm okay with that. I'd rather stand out than fit in. Yes, I have tried to fit in. It never works out, so I'd rather just be me. The only place I really seem to fit in is with comic geeks, and most of them are straight/hetero.

These days, I don't meet many new people. I don't go to the bars anymore. I don't drink (or smoke, or take drugs) and I'm not too interested in dancing, so I don't see the point. I never really liked the people I met in bars. I'm tired of getting hit on by men who are already partnered (or married). I'm not the other man, so stop trying to make me into that! I've always managed to attract the wrong person, and I'm tired of that.

So, what should I do? People will say that there's more places to meet gay men than the bars. Really? In my city, it's the bars or the gay church. I've been to the gay church. It's just as clique-ish as the bars, but with the added bonus of militant lesbians glaring at you for daring to be male! (Yes, really! There is a faction of lesbians who are anti-male, and a faction of gay men who are anti-female.) I have noticed Meet-Up groups popping up, but most of those meetings seem to dovetail with 1) other plans that have been made or 2) a lack of funds to go do anything.

So, what's a guy to do? I'll muddle on through, I suppose. I'm content with my own company, and I don't feel that I *NEED* to be in a relationship. I'm thankful for that. I have friends I can hang out with, and I'm also happy to go out on my own. It would be nice to meet more people, and with these online dating sites, I approach it as meeting a potential friend. Maybe we'd all have a better time of finding what we want (relationship, a good lay, etc...) if we took the approach of meeting a potential friend, instead of answering people with "I'm a big bottom!"

Happy Gay Anniversary!

I was at Target last week, looking for an anniversary card for my parents. Lo and behold, I stumble across this:

Anniversary cards for Male/Male couples!

AWESOME!

It's about time that cards like this are available in mainstream stores! Sorry ladies, I didn't check to see if there were any for two women in love. I was just so excited to see this!

It's a little thing, I know. But it's a sign of acceptance, and I like seeing this.

BTW, my folks celebrated their 56th Anniversary! How awesome is that?

Corn & Cheddar Mashed Potato Fritters

Once again, I tried a new recipe. The other night, I made barbeque chicken, mashed potatoes, and fresh corn. Yummy! Well, what to do with the leftovers? I looked up and found a recipe here:

So, I set out to try it. I had the corn and the potatoes. I used a mixture of shredded cheese, and I didn't have any green onions, sadly. Still, the fritters were easy to make, and turned out tasting delicious! They heat up a treat too! I took photos during the cook process so you could see them done in a regular kitchen.

I still have leftovers, so I may just make up another batch...

ANNT Solar Powered String Lights

Recently, I received a set of ANNT Solar Powered String Lights. These were provided free (I paid postage) for an honest review. I like seeing the lights out during the Holidays, and it's something I'd like to get into. I thought solar powered lights would be a good way to go, and that these would be worth trying.

So, shortly after I received them, we were in the path of a hurricane. It was cloudy out, getting ready to storm. I put the solar panel in the window anyway, to give it a shot. I wasn't ready to put lights up, but it was worth seeing if they worked. To my surprise, the lights charged. When I was going to bed, I turned them on again, and the lights worked, giving off a good light. In fact, the power went out that night (3am-ish), and used them as a light source. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm afraid of the dark, and liked having the light available. The hurricane was not a direct hit for us, by the way. We just had a lot of rain and wind, as well as minor power loss.

The lights have two modes. Press the button once, and the light is on. Press it again, and they blink. Press again to turn off. The lights also came with a spike you can attach the solar panel to. I liked the lights a lot and look forward to using them outside during the upcoming holidays.
The pictures attached are mine, both with lights on and off. And yes, they're in my messy bedroom, but it still gives you a regular person's view of the lights.

If you're looking for some solar powered lights, give these a shot!

Cupcakes and a new digital abstract!

So, in my recent adventures in eating... Yesterday I decided I would go out for lunch. My original intent was to hunt down a food truck that I like! I had the directions for where to go, but the office park they were in yesterday was a bit of a maze and confusing to me. I eventually gave up because I was getting to a point where I needed to eat. I was close to the Avenues Mall, so I headed there.

At the mall, I got lunch from Ruby Thai!

Like most foot court Asian places, Ruby Thai is cafeteria style, and you can get combos based on how many dishes you choose from. I got the 2-dish combo... electing to get Mango Chicken and Spicy Grilled Chicken. I also got them with curried rice noodles. The rice noodles have a nice flavor on the their own. The Spicy Grilled Chicken lived up to it's name - it was spicy! I normally only like spice for flavor, and not for heat. This was borderline for me. That said, it tasted good and I ate it all. The Mango Chicken is fried chicken bits tossed in a sweet & spicy mango sauce. The spice levels on this is very mild, and I enjoyed it a lot!

So, the title of this is "Cupcakes". I bought a Groupon a few weeks back for Cupcake Fifty Etc, which is located in a kiosk near the food court at the Avenues Mall (in front of Dillard's). By spending a few extra dollars, I got three cupcakes... Raspberry White Chocolate, Butterfinger, and Key Lime Strawberry. I took them home to have as treats for later.

So, I tried the Key Lime Strawberry cake first. Now, to explain, they have a Dollar Deals shelf, which is where this came from. Since it's a kiosk, obviously the cupcakes have to be transported there instead of coming direct from the kitchen. Some get "damaged" in transport. It's merely cosmetic. It's still gonna taste good! And it did! I liked this flavor. If I'm not mistaken, the frosting was cream cheese based with swirls of strawberry. As you can see, the cake (which was light and tender) was a swirl of key lime and strawberry flavors. Now, while I enjoyed this cake, I did feel they could bump up both flavors a little. I appreciate not being knocked upside the head with an overwhelming tart lime flavor, but would have liked it a little stronger. That said, I enjoyed this cake.

The second cake I had was the Butterfinger cupcake! This tasted like a vanilla cake and buttercream icing with crushed Butterfinger candy swirled in. It was yummy! Again, the cake was tender and light. The icing was smooth, and I loved getting little bits of candy when I ate it. Well done! I haven't eaten my third cupcake yet.... it's today's treat! Based on these two, I'm confident it will be delicious.

I want to give Cupcake Fifty Etc props on two things! 1) The cupcakes are moist! I have had plenty of dry cupcakes. As I stated above, these were tender and moist. 2) The icing was great! It was smooth and tasted good! I've been to several bakeries and cupcake shops in the past where the icing was gritty... as in, they used the wrong sugar to make it.  I give Cupcake Fifty Etc and A+! Check them out the next time you're at the Avenues Mall, or visit them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CupCake-Fifty-etc-172897956143745/?fref=ts

Beefcake Photos for auction!

This past week, I've been listing Beefcake Photos for auction, up on eBay!

Normally I use the "buy it now" listing feature, but a batch of free auction listings inspired me to list more photos as auctions. You can check them out at http://stores.ebay.com/korokstudios   As always, a reminder that not everything is "safe for work". You are viewing images of men that are intended to show the men off as sexy.

My aesthetic, as always, is that sexy, attractive, and interesting can be found in all kinds of men! Not everyone is the muscle man we often see in media, or the "(college) kid next door" type. Some guys are heavier, or while not heavy, lacking an athletic build. Some guys shave their body hair, where other are hairy. There are so many appealing visuals among men that I feel none of them should be ignored.

I also have an independent store for my photo prints that will soon be closing (and relocating, probably to eBid): http://dynakor.wix.com/korokstudios  You can purchase photos there until 7 August. The store here is closing due to lack of sales. I will revamp the site in early August (and possibly give this blog a bit of a make-over as well).

I know there are collectors still out there... Do you still want photo prints (meaning the ones from a photo lab)? What about digital packages? What are you interested in collecting these days?

Take care!

What has Korey been up to?

I wish I could answer that question with something like "non-stop adventures", but sadly, life has been pretty much the same around here.

I did go see "Secret Life Of Pets". The party included my best friend, her grandson, my nephew, and my mother. FUNNY movie! We all enjoyed it.

A couple of weeks ago, my nephew and I hit the Comic Book Connection show. We both got lots and lots of comics to read there! Love going through their 50-cents boxes. You never know what treasures you will find. After that, we had lunch at the Indian buffet. Yum! My nephew's opinion was: good, but weird. Last weekend, I took him to the Chinese buffet. I was proud of him for trying something new - I often think that Indian food intimidates people.

Other than that, I've been listing on eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/korokstudios (beefcake photos, comic art sketch cards). I've also been working on some sketch cards for a buddy, as a trade. I drew some golden-age super-heroines.

Camilla, Lady In Red, Miss Victory, Madame Strange, and Wildfire (3 card puzzle set)

Spider Queen

That's about all the excitement I can relate at this time. I'm hoping that there will be more to relate soon. I've mostly been trying to stay out of this overwhelming heat! It feels way too hot to go anywhere right now. I'll find something to do soon, however.

Take care everyone!

Today's Outing!

So, I had to run an errand for Mom this morning, and it was going to take me to an area of town I wanted to hit for a while. Sooooooooooo, off I went!

On my way out to the Regency Mall area, I took J. Turner Butler Blvd, where there is construction/destruction going on.I was sitting at the light, and thought that the view, with the cranes rising up, looked neat... so I snapped a pic. I would only do this at a stop light! Had the light changed, this shot would not have happened. I do believe in safety.

My first stop was Ollie's Outlet. It just opened in Jax, and it was interesting. It's basically a giant Big Lots type store. I found a couple of things, but got out of there for less than $5. The cashier wasn't too bright... he could have signed me up for their rewards program, but failed to do so. C'est la vie. I don't see myself heading to Ollie's very often, but I'll turn up there again.

Next, I drove across the parking lot to Books-A-Million. This particular BAM has a decent selection of bargain graphic novels. Yay! They had rearranged the store some, but I found what I was looking for, and got a few new graphic novels to read.

So, now it was time to head over to St. John's Town Center. Before I went to get what Mom needed, I stopped in at Five Below. Everything is $5 or less. Nice little store. I'll check it out again. I got Mom's stuff at Dillard's, and decided that I needed some lunch!

I was craving taco's, but didn't want a fast food joint. I forgot to look up where the taco truck I like would be today, so I ended up at Los Loros on Baymeadows & Old Kings Rd. I haven't eaten here in a l-o-n-g time! It made for a nice change of pace.

As you can see, I ordered Enchiladas Rancheros, which comes with a guacamole salad. The dish is two cheese enchiladas covered with sauce and cooked chicken. It was delicious! The cheese has a mild flavor that is enhanced by the sauce. The sauce has a nice flavor without being overwhelming, and the chicken was perfection! Good guacamole too! Like most places, chips and salsa were served. The guac salad on a chip was a great bite! (Yes, I'm weird. Get over it!)

Now I'm back home, and it's time to get some work done... I had fun running around today. It was nice to step away from the desk for a bit.

Take care everyone, and Have Fun!

What Financial Health Means to Me

So, this morning I'm working on organizing part of my personal space. It's a mess. It's always a mess. I feel like Hoarders will be here to tape a segment soon! Look at what's piled on my bed... books, comics, and some miscellaneous stuff...

So, what does that have to do with financial health? Quite a bit. I don't have my own house or apartment... I live with my parents. It benefits both them and me. I have some issues that relate to my severe depression, and find myself unable to hold down a traditional job. My parents are also getting on in years, and while they could get by, my being here makes things easier. Honestly, Mom can't drive anymore, so if nothing else, driving her around is a big help.

So, I'm a photographer and artist. My photography is mostly "beefcake" style photos, and I draw a lot of sketch cards. I sell a lot in my eBay store. I also sell art in other places, like Etsy, Redbubble, Society6, Zazzle, etc... See my links and other blog posts if you're interested in checking out my art. (Hint: buying something from me, or any other living/struggling artist is a big help!)

I have also been working on other things to improve my financial health. I am an impulse spender, and I try to curb those impulses. If nothing else, I tell myself to wait an hour or a day and see if I still want that item. This works well. I don't need every t-shirt I see, or every action figure, comic, cd, etc... And all that stuff piled on the bed? Most of it has not been read yet! So, I need to spend time catching up my reading. Like many book-lovers, I do have piles of unread books.

Long ago, I learned that I will always want more! This helps with being able to walk away from things I want.

I also look at other ways to earn money online. It might just be taking surveys to get a rewards card, or it might be a small job to earn some cash or submitting receipts to earn cash back. I even enter a lot of contests - mostly ones that have a cash prize or a vacation. I long to travel, and I did win a trip to Montreal a few years ago. It was a great trip!

So, to me, financial health means that I'm able to take care of myself, pay my bills, get my own place, and still have some cash on-hand to buy things that I want.

It's an on-going process. I opened an online banking account, and use it to save money. My goal is small right now... I try to put a small amount in every week. Sometimes I miss a week, but I keep plugging away at it. I have ideas about what I want to do in terms of business/earning money, and I'm taking (small) steps towards making that happen. I'm also trying to be open to different ways of earning.

For your financial health, I recommend reading articles. Take inspiration from personal stories (like this one, even if you think "that guy's cray-cray!"), look at alternative methods of earning some cash, and how to save and budget. Take the advice that works best for you.

Take care, everyone! I hope you have a great week!

Gay Pride 2016

For 2016, I have created two new pieces of digital art to celebrate Gay Pride! One, a bokeh style rainbow flag has been seen in a previous post, and this remixed flag with "PRIDE" emblazoned across it.

These two pieces are my artistic expressions of Pride! I am also working on a new painting that is inspired both by Pride, and the tragic shooting at The Pulse in Orlando. I am still reeling from that news, and trying to work it out. I am hurt, sad, and most of all - angry! I'd like to channel that anger in a positive manner.

So, what does "Pride" mean to me? Well, I'm a gay man. I have been openly gay since I was a teen-ager, and let me tell you, when I was a teen, I was the only one who was openly gay. In the 80's, you just didn't come out. Of course, I was kind of crazy, and even then I had stopped caring about what people thought about me, even though I also wanted to belong.

It's taken me a long time, but I realized I do not belong. I do not fit in. And that's okay. I don't have to be part of a group to enjoy meeting people. I feel blessed that I have all kinds of friends. I get can get along with just about anyone because I accept them as they are. I expect people to accept me as is.

I tend to think of myself as more of a comic geek than a gay man. Maybe I'm just a comic geek who happens to be gay. I love action figures, comics, reading books, watching tv and movies, and listening to music! I like being creative. It doesn't matter if I'm drawing, painting, taking photos, creating a dj mix, stringing beads, etc... I love it. Most importantly, I like myself and my own company. I'm an introvert, but I also like going out and seeing friends. My world can be small at times, and at other times it feels like I have the entire multiverse to explore.

Now go hug your friends and family. Tell them that you love them! And most importantly: accept them as they are.

FYI: If you like my Pride design, it's available in my Zazzle store - http://zazzle.com/korokstudios

Let Love Win!

As I write this, I am still having trouble wrapping my head around the massacre at The Pulse in Orlando, FL on Sunday morning. I cannot properly articulate the incredible sadness, shock, horror, anger, and more that I feel as we learn more about the event.

It is now Monday, middle of the afternoon. I consider what happened to be both a hate crime and an act of terrorism. I encourage you to seek your news about this from a variety of sources, including ones you might not normally turn to.

Most of all, I encourage you to do what you can to help! How? Follow this link for a few ideas:

In the wake of this tragedy, we need to come together. It's time to set aside this culture of hate that's been allowed to grow in America. It's never okay to hate. It is okay to disagree with one another. In that disagreement, take time to listen to the other person. You may never agree, but you might learn something. Show some compassion for one another. We need that. We ALL need that.

We are all equal! We all deserve the same rights!

Now that we've established that, let's learn to live together, and work together. Let's make sure no more acts of violence, hatred, and terror happen on American soil.  Let's love one another and celebrate both our differences and the things we have in common!

Allow love into your heart!

Let love win!

Peterbrooke Chocolatier re-opening in Mandarin

Today, 11 June, is the Grand Opening Party for Peterbrooke Chocolatier in Mandarin! They've moved their location to the Publix shopping center on San Jose Blvd and Mandarin Road.

I arrived around noon to check out the new location. The outside was decorated with an arch of balloons, and the store was buzzing! While it wasn't crowded, the store was not empty either. They had a face painting station set up for the kids, and all the yummy treats out on display! In addition to fine chocolate, you can get ice cream and baked treats. A greeter was handing out bags with Peterbrooke's signature chocolate popcorn - a yummy treat that they are well known for!

Peterbrooke has been in Jacksonville since 1983, according to their web-site. I remember their location in the San Marco shopping center when I would go there as a teen-ager. There was a used bookstore that I bought comics from, so whenever I was at Grandma's house, I walked up to San Marco. I often got some chocolate from Peterbrooke, and I remember one of the co-owners liked comics, and he was always nice to me.

So, today, I picked up a couple of treats as well as my popcorn. I got a milk chocolate bar, which has to be my favourite treat from Peterbrooke. I also decided to try one of their pecan pie bars. YUM! I love pecan pie, so this was a no-brainer for me to get! The crust has a good snap to it, and the bar is sweet and gooey, just like your best pecan pie recipe! I will be returning for this treat again! Sadly, my budget was limited so those were the only treats I got today.

Peterbrooke has locations all over Jacksonville, as well as Orlando, Tallahasse, Atlanta and other cities. Check out their site at www.peterbrooke.com for locations, and more info about the shop and what they have to offer.
